Final meeting and end of funding phase 2

After more than 3 successful years of intensive networking, the last joint network meeting took place on May 31, 2021. Unfortunately, due to the Corona pandemic, the last joint meeting could not take place physically. Therefore, the final meeting was organized in digital form. Thanks to modern technology, a constructive exchange of ideas between the partners was possible.

The partners worked together on new technical solutions to develop innovative medical products and treatment methods and to bring them to market. So far, ProSafeMed has generated 17 project applications and funding of around € 4 million.

The resulting collaborations will continue to be used to implement further ideas in the future, and the development projects that are still in progress will be completed in the coming months.

Networking and innovation in times of crisis

Innovations are elementary for a successful company development. In economically troubled times, however, they pose a particular challenge.

Even before Corona, the companies and research institutions operating in the international ZIM network ProSafeMed: For safe medical products and processes consciously decided to take advantage of the many benefits of network membership, such as new impulses and contacts, technology transfer, support in the acquisition of funding and the submission of applications.

Experience shows that good networking, constructive exchange and close interaction are more important than ever in these challenging times. Working together to drive innovation – this is how companies invest in their future capability.

Digitalization in medical technology

All areas of life are currently affected by the corona pandemic. Our healthcare system in particular is confronted with major challenges. But the crisis also opens up opportunities for accelerating digitalization in our healthcare system, which is a key factor in the further development of our medical care.

This is exactly where the partners in the ProSafeMed network are focusing their expertise, in particular by intelligently exploiting new opportunities in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) to develop technically innovative medical products and treatment methods and to place them on the market. As a result, patients can benefit from better diagnoses and more individualized therapies.

Network partner Smarterials Technology GmbH – Successful application in Horizon 2020 for the project “SafeGlov” – highly innovative safety gloves for medical personnel

The Smarterials Technology team has developed a technology that integrates the advantages and functionality of double gloves into single gloves. Its two-in-one gloves are based on an innovative microparticle layer. This layer allows the creation of a multi-barrier protection system and the integration of a perforation indicator – the first single glove ever to warn the user in case of breakage and possible contamination.

The project convinced the evaluators as well as the jury on site in Brussels, so that Smarterials Technology GmbH was able to win out over a total of 2009 competitors with the “SafeGlov” project at the first attempt. For the pitching interview in Brussels as the second stage of the application procedure, 192 SMEs (16 of them from Germany) were invited to Brussels. The EU is supporting the “SafeGlov” project in the period from 01/01/2020 – 31/12/2021 for measures to prepare the market entry.

Corona and MDR – German Medical Technology Association demands MDR moratorium (13.03.2020)

The German Medical Technology Association (BVMed) is calling for a MDR moratorium until the end of the corona virus crisis. The corona pandemic has a direct impact on the preparation of the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), for its entry into force on May 26 2020, says BVMed Managing Director Dr. Marc-Pierre Möll. First Notified Bodies are closing or are restricted in their activities. Authorities are affected. Suppliers are breaking away. And this in addition to the known problems: too few Notified Bodies, too few experts, missing legal acts and guidelines. The doubly affected MedTech industry now needs a MDR moratorium, demands Möll.

New ZIM guideline published – better and more tailor-made support for innovative SMEs

[ZIM” stands for “Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand”, which means “Central Innovation Programme for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)]

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) published the new guideline for the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM) on 20 January 2020. This replaces the previous funding guideline, which expired on 31 December 2019. In the future, innovative SMEs are to be supported even better and more tailor-made by the programme. This year alone, 555 million euros will be provided.

The new ZIM optimises the proven programme in many areas. Young companies and micro-enterprises as well as first-time innovators will receive better support. In future, small companies from all structurally weak regions will benefit from increased funding rates. The grantable costs of the funding modules have also increased. In addition, national and international knowledge transfer and the transfer of research results into practice will be intensified.

With more than 3,000 new technology development projects every year, ZIM is the Federal Government’s largest programme to promote innovative SMEs.

The ZIM project organisation is currently being put out to tender and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020. Applications can then be submitted under the updated ZIM funding conditions.

The updated ZIM guideline can be found here.
